Excerpt | Archive documents, books, stories keep revealing various aspects of the Bucharest of yore. The article remakes the history of a Bucharestan residence - the Berkowitz house built by the end of the 19th, in the Red sector, at a crossroad between the Sfinţilor Street (Saints' St.) and the Calea Moşilor avenue, right across the Biserica cu Sibile church (Church with Sibilles). This residence has been recently restored by Loredana and Silviu Preda, and the article renders the story of the house, in connection with the place where it was located, with the quarter and the town in its whole, with the people who lived on that street, with the reasons that had determined the inhabitants to live there for at least two generations. The story is, at the same time, that of the middle class of Bucharest, by the year 1900: multicultural and varietal confessional. At the same time, the article renders the story of the works undertaken to restore the house and its glamour. |
