Photography was an astonishing new practice coming from the Occident, to the 19th century inhabitants of Bucharest. The earliest activities in the field were attested by 1834, but the first news about a photographer’s studio were issued in the „ Vestitorul Românesc" newspaper, on March 19th, 1843. In time, a few photographers became famous, such as: Carol Popp de Szathmari, Ludwig Angerer, I. Pohlmann, Franz Duschek, Franz Mandy, E. Pesky and others. The article remakes their careers, their techniques, rendering thus an expressive chapter in the history of Bucharest. |
