Excerpt | As the towns and cities of the world are continuously increasing, the present paper aims at explaining, from an anthropological perspective, the phenomenon of urban dispersion - mainly that of the outskirts. The outskirts concept is being analyzed - its evolution in time, the expansion phenomenon, the urban-rural double migration; the physical, social, economic and cultural aspects of these transition areas are also described. The peripheral areas of the world-wide cities bear common features: they are diverse, they lack homogeneity, they gather the poorest population, but also the richest. They are all transition areas, spatially and functionally non-coagulated, with partly planned or non-planned development, with peculiarities concerning the quality of the dwelling, and rising special social problems, in multiple domains. |
