Excerpt | The four posters belonging to Mr. Stroe Slătineanu's art collection were created at the end of the 19'h century in the specific new style, known in France as the "art nouveau" style. They had not only a publicity message but also a high esthetic value, the authors being well known and appreciated. In 1880 Huysmans said that it is more gift in a poster than in the paintings exhibited at the official "salon". These posters represent women in different attitudes: strange and untouchable surrounded by flowers and animals with symbolical significance, as coming from another world, full of mysteries - the two signed by Marcel Lenoir, one of them entitled "Le Monstre", very elegant and "mondene" with fashionable jewelry - the one signed by Alphonse Mucha for the magazine "La Plume", or serious and intellectual as in the poster created by Edward Penfield for "The New-York Times". |
