Excerpt | The First Major Art Exhibition in Bucharest (1864) In mid-19th century, most of the Romanian artists who studied abroad, either in France, ltaly or Germany, were back home and ready to begin an artistic career in their own country. Such painters as Theodor Aman and Gheorghe Tattarescu were trying hard to found a school of fine arts and to accustom their countrymen with modern painting (i.e. painting of their time). As a coronation of their efforts was the first exhibition mounted in Bucharest, in January 1864, in the Saint Sava Academy's halls. The goal of this exhibition was to select and buy works of art for enriching the Art Museum. But the main goal was to show that Romania has its own skilled and talented native artists whose accomplishments were meant to encourage other youngsters to embrace such a career. The event was a great success in this respect. That very year the National School of Fine Arts was founded in Bucharest with Theodor Aman as its head. As director of the school and of the Art Museum, Aman was also in charge of the annual Exhibition of Artists Alive (Exposiţiunea Artiştilor în Viaţă) which was organized since 1865. |
