Excerpt | The "STELLA" Factory The "STELLA" factory was founded in 1883, by an Austrian businessman, dr. Iulius Hofmeyer, and was meant to produce soap, candles and other chemical and cosmetic products. At the moment the "STELLA" factory was founded, the demand for soap and candles was fulfilled by several small workshops, and the higher quality products were imported. Hofmeyer brought to Bucharest the highest technology in the field, orgnized the work and started a large-scale investment. New luxury products such coco or glycerin soap were produced, as well as colored and high quality candles, and eau de cologne. In 1906, due to the quality of its products, the "STELLA" factory was awarded the title of Royal Provider - being thus among the few houses of business having earned their right to provide goods to the Romanian Royal House. The "STELLA" factory continued to exist during the communist period, ensuring in 1989, almost 90% of the local production of soap. The author records the stages in the evolution of the factory and its post 1989 history. |
