Excerpt | Initially an obscure settlement on the borders of the Tibru river, Rome managed to turn into one of the mast important political powers of the Mediterranean area. With the population growth, and mainly after the Punic wars and by the end of the civil wars at the end of the Republic, the administrative structures of the great town became obsolete, unadjusted to the new social and political realities. Therefore, by important reforms, Augustus modified these structures radically. ln the 7th year B. C. he divided the urban territory in 14 departments or regions. The fight against fires was an important part of the Roman urban activities, and the article presents aspects of their organization as well as some of the events recorded by history. |
