Excerpt | Medical Services in Bucharest during the First Half of the 19th Century Only five hospitals existed in Bucharest, by the beginnings of the 19th century, summing up about 54 beds. They were founded as follows: Coltea (1704), Pantelimon (1752), Dudesti (1796), Spitalul temnitei (1804), Filantropia (1812); in 1838, the Brancovenesc hospital also started to function. 19th century Bucharestan documents offer important pieces of information concerning the way these hospitals were organized, about their doctors, their incomes, donations, calamities and so on. By the 18th century, the bases were laid for a sanitary activity in Bucharest. The first doctors and surgeons were coming from abroad. The article presents various aspects concerning the development of the medical life in Bucharest. |
