Excerpt | The article deals with a document issued on July 1, 1769, by the ruler Alexandru Constantin Moruzi, concerning the foundation of a hospital for plague-sicken in Bucharest ( Dudeşti). The graphic beauty of the document is remarkable; the decorations combine symbols of both secular and divine power; the arms of Walachia and Moldavia are joined together (as Moruzi had governed them alternatively); the decoration also includes effigies of protective saints such as Alexamdru, Visarion, Haralambie, Dimitrie and a votive portrait on the background of which he city of Bucharest can be seen. The author identifies the names of the decorators. |
