Excerpt | The end of World War I brought about the end of a patriarchal life style in the Romanian Capital. The city life modernized, becoming more agitated, crowded, and dynamic. The increase of the city life intensity, the mew exigencies of speed and comfort, the fashion brought in form the West made it necessary for the city rulers to bring in various means of transport. The tramway appeared in the streets, as well as the first private automobiles. By combining tradition with modernity, Bucharest showed its peculiarity of belonging both to the Orient and to the Occident. |
