Excerpt | Mihai Băbeanu was a representative personality for the 181h century Bucharestan world. Documents attest his gradual hierarchical ascendance up to the high dignity of Bailiff - a dignity he held by the mid 18th century. Although he was not a nobleman, by his behavior - his philanthropic acts, his personal court, his real estates in town - he showed a tendency to approach and imitate the higher classes. Mihai Băbeanu's life shows his will to overpass his condition (imposed on him by the Phanariote era). As a rich man, he figured out social ascension as a personal target, hence his desire to impose himself by means of philanthropic deeds - typical of the mid 18th century. The history of Bucharest recorded his name due to two social assistance institutions he founded, by the „Icoanei" and „Hagiului" churches. The present study offers detailed analysis of the information collected from documents mentioning Mihai Băbeanu. |
