Excerpt | The article presents aspects of the activity of an important Romanian sculptor of German origin, Emil Wilhelm Becker (1881 - 1952), born in Bucharest, as a son of August Becker (who had come to Romania invited by king Carol 1st, in 1875). He studied sculpture with the famous Romanian sculptor Ioan Georgescu. He was known for having been the favorite sculptor of the royal house of Romania. Among his works: a monument located in the Wălter Mărăcineanu square in Bucharest from which the artist s name has been erased during the communist epoch, and is still missing today, do that the correct name of its author is sometimes mistaken. The sculpture has had an exceptional artistic contribution in the Romanian medalists. As a peculiarity, he used to create two versions of portraits for some of the medals. |
