Excerpt | Gheorghe Bibescu, ruler of Walachia and heir, by marriage, of the domain and the XVIIIth century-old building of the Văcăreşti family, ordered a new palace to be raised, in the year 1847. He solicited the architect Johann Schletter for the project. Works began in the spring of 1847, but were interrupted, as the ruler abdicated and exiled himself, as a consequence of the revolution started on the 11-th of June 1848. The walls of the unfinished palace were soon mined and the materials - used for other constructions. The archeological diggings brought to light the vastness of the works and their technique. |
