Excerpt | The two letters published here are preserved in the collection of the heraldist Mihail G. Ştephănescu, grandson of the composer George Ştephănescu, founder of the Romanian National Opera. They were sent by "Georges de Golesco ", a Belgian descendant of the historical boyar family of the Golescu, to his cousin prince Alexandru Racovitza, himself descendant of the same family, grandfather of Mr. Ştephănescu’s wife. They bring some news about the fortune succession of Mrs. Emmerez de Charmoy and of Maria Bengescu, art historian, both relatives of these two figures who had been living in France. lt can be observed that in spite of the prominent role played by the Golescu family in the 19th century, some of its descendants chose to live in the West, in Belgium and France, many years before the instauration of the totalitarian regime. |
